Volkswagen Passat Review: The First Luxury Sedan Built On Their $60 Billion Dollar MQB Platform

Exciting things are happening at Mensxp, the most recent being getting invited to the launch of the all new sprawling Volkswagen Passat. Trust us when we say this, Volkswagen put up quite a show for the reveal of their new luxury sedan in New Delhi.

After guzzling mugs of frothy cappuccino and munching on one too many gourmet cookies, we first got a look at a rather futuristic fashion clothingline, followed by the reveal of the vehicle. Stephan Knapp, head of Indian Operations, Volkswagen Passenger Cars, said that the Passat is the result of the meeting point of two big cultural influences, namely, fashion and technology, which is why the collab with the young designer. Here’s a time lapse of the clothingline designed by Jasna Rok, who also happens to be an award winning entrepreneur from the U.S.A. Not to worry though, we’ll come to the sedan in just a bit.

We sat with bated breath as the luxury sedan, in ivory white, pulled up on stage, and it was quite a spectacle! You know a vehicle is loved when photographers from various publications jump up to get pictures of it, as many as they can, in all angles possible; well, can’t blame them as Volkswagen did a brilliant job.

Everything about the #NewPassat communicates luxury and sophistication to the point that it’s treated like a person, not an automobile, and definitely not an inanimate object. Volkswagen was clearly going for an understated appeal in the manufacturing of the vehicle, which is ironic because that understatement is what speaks volumes about the car. They call it a “fine young man” that walks through a corridor full of people “tongue-tied” as they “feel its presence”. Take a look at this video of the reveal and you’ll know what we’re talking about, followed by our take on the vehicle.

We’d like to mention that Volkswagen global spent a whopping $60 billion dollars on developing a new automobile platform called MQB, short for Modularer Querbaukasten (German for Modular Transverse Matrix). What’s a Modular Transverse Matrix? Let’s keep it simple, it means ensuring efficiency, safety, comfort, convenience, design and driving pleasure through state of the art production facilities. The new Passat is a baby of this production platform.

How does that make the Passat better?

MQB allows for uniformity across all vehicles and better design. If you look at the Passat, of course it’s reminiscent of it’s predecessor, but you’ll also notice that:

– It’s bigger, wider and longer.

– Its boot space has been increased to 586 litres.

– Its has “Nappa Leather” upholstering.

– It has 9 airbags.

– Its analog-ish infotainment system from the 2013 version has received an upgrade with a 12.3 inch TFT display, with add on features like Apple CarPlay and Googleandroid Auto and an improved 360 rear view.

– It has got wood veneer panelling across the dash and doors.

– It has a panoramic sunroof that is seamlessly aligned with the roof (We thought for the longest time it was a skylight!)

– It has keyless engine start and stop.

– It has 6 speed DSG automatic transmission.

– It has a revamped 2 litre 4 cylinder Turbocharged engine pushing out 170hp and a top speed of 260 kmph.

– It has LED headlamps that are made to impress, especially combined with the horizontal triple-slat grill.

That’s how you know that 60 billion was well spent!

The only shortcoming we noticed with the cabin was insufficient leg room (we’re tall, leggy people) in both front and rear seating and a rather low roof (did we mention we’re tall?). So, if you hit a speed bump, you’ll definitely hit your head and two tall people can’t sit on the same side, front and back.

As for us, we’re just happy we got to test out what most buttons do, the best being popping the hood by pushing in the insignia!
